"The Esoteric Art of Memory" with Doug Russell

The night he took his first degree, Doug Russell watched officers deliver the entire ritual from memory, including a lengthy lecture, and asked a question that would take him the next fourteen years to answer. Why do Masons memorize?

Doug Russell returns to the show to reveal his forthcoming book, Remembering the Past, Present, and Future: Esoteric Memory Arts and Spiritual Freemasonry. It is a book about memory, about how memory connects to spirituality and to the esoteric side of our nature, and it is going to the publisher now, timed to launch at the Esotericism in Freemasonry Conference.

The conversation is a guided tour through the whole argument. Doug opens with three kinds of memory drawn from Aristotle, Plato, and Gurdjieff: exoteric memory of the world of the senses, esoteric memory of the inner and divine world where all learning is remembering, and self-remembering, the awareness of who you really are and where you are heading. From there he walks the classical art of memory, first written down in a Roman treatise on rhetoric around 80 BCE, the technique of placing vivid images in the rooms of an imagined building so that anything can be recalled in order.

Then the heart of it. Memory palaces. Doug traces the term back to St. Augustine, who described his own memory as a vast realm with spacious palaces, and through Hugh of Saint Victor, whose Mystical Ark of around 1225 turned Noah's Ark into an enormous memory diagram of the whole of sacred history. That thread runs straight into the Craft, where Noah's Ark, the Tabernacle, and Solomon's Temple all function as memory palaces, and where the tracing board, the winding stairs, the two pillars, and the apron are all, read correctly, memory technology.

Along the way the discussion opens onto the wider esoteric tradition: Antoine Faivre and his three great currents of alchemy, astrology, and magic, the perennial philosophy and its golden chain of sages, Giordano Bruno and his fantastic memory work, the influence that reached the court of King James VI and the William Shaw statutes of 1598 and 1599 as modern Masonry began to form, and Ken Wilber's account of the pre-modern, modern, and post-modern eras and the flatland that a purely materialist science leaves behind.

It is a wide, generous, deeply learned conversation, and it is only a preview. Doug is saving the rest for the conference.

Doug Russell is a retired psychotherapist and a longtime student of the Western esoteric tradition, with roots in modern theosophy going back some fifty years. Raised in Freemasonry in 2012, he came to the Craft looking for its spiritual dimension and has spent the years since making the case that it is there and can be named. He served seven years as editor-in-chief of the Fraternal Review, the magazine of the Southern California Research Lodge, and has presented on the art of memory at lodges and research bodies across the country, including the Masonic Restoration Foundation. He is among the most consistent presenters at the Esotericism in Freemasonry Conference.
